About Robert Sloan

Robert H. (Bob) Sloan is a professor of computer science at UIC and the outgoing head of the department, where he oversaw its growth from 28 faculty members to more than 80, together with a nearly tenfold increase in undergraduate enrollment. He holds a BS in mathematics from Yale and an SM and PhD in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Sloan over the years served as a program director at the National Science Foundation and as member of the Department of Homeland Security’s Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee. His scholarly work includes both computer science education and public policy and legal issues in computer security, electronic privacy, and machine learning. He is an IEEE Computer Science Golden Core member and a 2019 University of Illinois University Scholar.

Prior to the advent of Chicago Tech Circle, Sloan was extremely proud to serve as the Academic Lead and grant Principal Investigator for Break Through Tech Chicago, with its mission of increasing gender diversity in the tech world by preparing more women and nonbinary people with the knowledge and skills they need to excel in tech.
